Coaching Requirements

It’s that time of year that we start thinking about the fall high school Colorado League season again!  The league audited teams last year and our team, as well as many others, were not in compliance with their requirements.  Basically, we need to have a level 2 or 3 coach in every group.  The major hurdles to becoming a level 2 coach are the on the bike training, Wilderness First Aid, and professional development units.

I will be looking at putting together a few opportunities to help coaches accomplish these requirements throughout the summer.    The easiest requirement to complete is professional development.  The league is offering 3 different opportunities to take care of this from the comfort of your living room. If you have not completed these in the past, or need to update your continuing ed, please, please, please sign up for one of these nights (the Colorado League has scholarships available (link below) or GVYC will reimburse you).

If you are ready to update your coaching requirements with the league, please get started on that ASAP.  The sooner our coaches are in, and certifications are up to date, the smoother and safer the start of our season will be.  I’ve already done mine, and everything went much quicker than last year.  Lots of stuff transferred over, so I basically had to do concussion training, and my background check.  Please start this process now.  I’m happy to help anyone who needs help navigating their registration, but it is much easier for me to help during the summer than it is the week before the season starts.

Changes in the Future

Over the course of the past ten years, we’ve always tried to think about what’s next as the team has grown.  We are at a point where it’s time to think about what’s next again.  Our HS team population has stalled out at about 50 riders the past three years, and honestly in our current format we can’t support any other riders.  It’s become difficult to host whole team practices, and we’ve already had to split into two groups for our practices.  Because of this, we will be looking to split our team into school-based teams for the fall of 2023.  This fall we will function much like we have in the past, but I will be looking for coaches that are interested in head coaching one of the high school teams, to train under me this season in preparation for running their own team in the fall of 2023.

We believe this change in structure will allow teams to grow more, riders to have a stronger connection with their school clubs, and athletes to receive more purposeful coaching in a smaller setting.  We know an important component of our program in the past has been the camaraderie between kids from all schools in the valley and we will be working on ways to continue to foster this even as the fall teams move into a more traditional high school team format.

Thank you,

Geoff Williams
