Guiding Principles
WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION BY:
- Providing athletes with a fun and safe environment to achieve their individual cycling goals.
- Decreasing barriers to participation in our programs.
- Developing athletes that are gracious and respectful contributors to and leaders in their community.
- Nurturing knowledge for a healthy lifestyle from the seat of a bicycle.
Core Values
- Fun can be the satisfaction of conquering a hard climb, finishing a tough workout or the thrill of fast descent. Or, it can be laughs with friends on the trails. Or the joy of being outside. Whatever the type of fun, weโll find it.
- Teamwork is riding with your friends as part of being on a team. We seek out friends to ride with who will encourage us, laugh at and with us, spot landings and cheer us up that climb.
- Passion for being outside on a bike is the fuel that drives us to ride further, faster and have more fun.
- Community is the glue that binds us together through the simple pleasure of riding a bike. Knowing there is a whole community of like minded people supporting us gives us the motivation to push a little harder, go a little faster or try a little more.
- Positivity is the understanding that the fun is in the process and we can accomplish hard things through determination, resilience and perseverance
Grand Plan
Grand Valley Youth Cycling has seen some exceptional growth over recent years and is developing a Grand Plan to more effectively meet the needs of the community and prepare the organization for the next 15 years of success.
If you would like to be involved in developing that plan, supporting the plan and the organization, helping fund these efforts, or participate in our programming, please connect with us at information@grandvalleymtb.org.
We are on a mission!
At Grand Valley Youth Cycling, we believe in the joy of cycling for everyone. Our programs are designed to inspire young riders to develop their skills, make friends, and explore the great outdoors. Join us in creating fun, safe cycling experiences for all ages!
The GVYC Mission is to develop an inclusive and active mountain biking community for youth riders of all abilities and interests in the Grand Valley.
Empowering Youth Through Cycling
Grand Valley Youth Cycling (GVYC) is a nonprofit organization that delivers high quality afterschool and year-round mountain bike programming for youth in the community. Initially founded in 2011 to support the needs of high school bike racing teams in the Colorado High School Cycling League, we have since expanded to better serve the youth of the Grand Valley through the addition of middle school and other skill-based mountain biking programs to meet a larger range of abilities and interests. GVYC mountain bike programs blend the physical and mental health benefits of mountain biking with access to outdoor physical activity, awareness of our public lands, trail stewardship and a healthy lifestyle.

Fawn Lawrence
Board President
I am a Grand Junction native with a few years away in Florida and Texas for higher education. I enjoy being an active part of our community both in service and recreation. I was introduced to GVYC when my oldest son was in kindergarten and he saw the high school team training at the Water Tower Trails. He was immediately hooked and announced heโd be part of it someday! My boys have participated in many aspects of GVYC: middle school development, high school XC race, gravity and enduro. GVYC has been a such a positive experience for my teens not only in rider development but also in personal growth and solid friendships that I decided to join the board in 2022.

Andrew Courtney
Board Vice President
Andrew was born and raised in Montrose, CO. After time abroad with his military career he relocated to Grand Junction in 2012, returning to the western slope trails and lifestyle he loves. Joining the board in 2025 he has been coaching with GVYC since 2022 in the middle school, gravity skills, enduro racing programs. He is committed to continuing to grow GVYC to meet the needs of the communities future generations. On the weekends you will find Andrew on the trails or in the bike park with his wife and their two elementary aged boys.
Michael Kuzminski
Board Secretary
After growing up in the Upper Midwest, I moved to Utah to attend law school and landed in the Grand Valley in 1999. I bought my first mountain bike in the mid-90s and have been riding ever since, first with friends, then with my wife, and finally with our kids, both of whom ride with GVYC. I was recruited to the board in early 2024 and have been extremely impressed with my fellow board members and the Executive Director, who together are taking GVYC to a new level. I am grateful for the varied and growing biking opportunities GVYC provides for the kids of the Grand Valley and am excited by the success of our participants across multiple disciplines.

Rick Garmany
Board Member
I grew up in Boulder Colorado where I was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in organized cycling and bike racing from middle school through high school. I’ve always felt that many lessons learned around cycling did much to prepare me for life in general. My wife Tami and I moved to the Grand Valley in 2007 and have been trying (less successfully with every passing year) to keep up with our two sons Sam, and Ben ever since. I’m a cardiologist at Community Hospital and enjoy helping to promote healthy lifestyles through exercise as part of my involvement in GVYC. I joined the board of directors in 2024 after serving as both a high school and middle school coach with the program since 2019. I look forward to helping keep our program successful for future Grand Valley riders for many years to come.

Marie McGowan
Board Member
I grew up in Collbran, Colorado, on a cattle ranch where we traded in our horses for mountain bikes when I was little. I spent my childhood spinning on gravel roads and carrying my bike as we log hopped our way across the Grand Mesa, threatening to put rocks in my dad’s pack if he didn’t stop. I have always loved to be outside and found confidence in my athleticism through lifelong sports. I was introduced to GVYC when my older daughter started, and I fell in love with the community and the opportunities kids have for growth, both physically and mentally. When I’m not volunteering with GVYC, I am a teacher and a mama of two GVYC riders.
