Grand Valley Youth Cycling is built off a foundation of supportive, high quality coaching. In our fifteenth season, GVYC is launching the Coaching Excellence Initiative to develop more coaches, provide ongoing professional training for GVYC coaches, and to continue to raise the quality of our programs.
Professional Development Training for Coaches
GVYC conducts a series of professional development opportunities for GVYC coaches to provide them opportunities to advance their experience and skills as coaches. This includes a series of training sessions with leading mountain bike instructors focused on coaching topics for a spectrum of skills, riding disciplines and topics. These small group sessions allow for deep learning through demos, practice, and Q&A periods. Lead by certified experts, the coach development trainings help GVYC offer participants exceptional learning opportunities as they grow as mountain bikers, trail users, and individuals.
Medical Training
The safety of our participants, coaches, volunteers and staff is a non-negotiable priority. Cycling carries inherent risks, and our coaches are often the first responders in the event of a fall, collision, or medical situation during practice or competition. GVYC is formalizing safety training at the organizational level to establish a consistent standard that every coach meets, ensuring that safety is reliable and a core part of our programming.
Measuring Success
GVYC will evaluate the Coaching Excellence Initiative by tracking certification completion rates across the coaching staff. Success will be measured against a clear benchmark, with GVYC coaches expected to achieve minimum standards.
Progress toward each requirement will be monitored throughout the year, with completion rates reported as a percentage of the total active coaching staff. Full or near-full completion across all requirements will demonstrate that GVYC has successfully built the consistent foundation of safety and coaching excellence that this initiative is designed to create.
Additional metrics tracked will include: number of coaches certified, total certifications completed, training hours completed, and number of athletes coached by certified coaches. GVYC will also monitor changes in coach retention rates and conduct post-training surveys measuring coach confidence in athlete development, instruction technique, and risk management.
The Trail Ahead
GVYC serves hundreds of youth across year-round programs at every skill level, and demand continues to grow. Sustaining and expanding that impact requires a coaching staff that is trained, certified, and equipped to meet a consistent standard of safety and instructional excellence across every program we offer.
